Estimate only, for general information and not tax advice. It uses the current resident rates and a flat 2 per cent Medicare levy, and excludes the low-income offset, HELP and HECS repayments, the Medicare Levy Surcharge, salary packaging and other offsets. Confirm your position with the ATO. Last checked June 2026.

How Australian income tax works

Australia uses marginal tax brackets: each rate applies only to the income inside its band, not your whole income, so a pay rise never leaves you worse off. On top of the tax, most people pay a 2 per cent Medicare levy. The full breakdown is in the tax brackets explained and our complete tax guide.

What this calculator leaves out

It is a clean estimate of base tax and the Medicare levy. It does not model the low-income tax offset, the Medicare Levy Surcharge for higher earners without private hospital cover, compulsory HELP or HECS repayments, salary sacrifice into super, or deductions that lower your taxable income. Those can move the final figure either way.

The bottom line

Use it to sanity-check a payslip or compare two salaries. To see how your tax fits your wider finances, a tool like Your Finance Guide helps you join it up.
